Addressing international students' food and grocery needs

MY ROLE
I was involved in the project from start to end, collaborating with fellow UX Researchers and Designers to incorporate the Stanford Design Thinking approach.
Mixed Methods Research: At the requirements gathering phase, I designed a survey and analyzed the responses to gauge the most prominent issues faced by international students in the US.
Following this I conducted two in-depth user interviews to better understand the nature and effect of these issues.
Finally, to narrow down the problem space, we used affinity mapping to categorize the main issues.
Ideation: I drew up user personas, user stories and scenarios, 3 storyboards, task analysis and Krazy 8s to get started on a solution.
Wireframing/Prototyping: I worked on the wireframes and high-fidelity prototype for the carpool part of the app.
Evaluation and Redesign: Finally, we conducted think-aloud usability testing with 5 of our primary stakeholders.
We also conducted a heuristic evaluation of the app. We then incorporated the feedback into the final prototype.

The influx of international students to the United States has steadily increased over the past decade.
How do we help international students better acclimatize to the United States amidst their hectic academic schedules?

International students face a myriad unique issues when settling into a new country. These are further compounded by academic stress as well as time and financial constraints. Yet, apart from the academic and career aspects, this space remains largely unexplored.

As international students ourselves, we were familiar with issues faced by our stakeholders. Our backgrounds also lent to us being able to understand their perspectives and pain points. Of course, the caveat was to not let our proximity with the stakeholders cloud our design thinking.

Simplicity is just Complexity elsewhere
While making simple designs that can easily be understood by the end-users is key, it must be kept in mind that making something simple to use can end up adding complexity in the mechanism enabling this simplicity in the background (typically backend processing and memory usage). Thus, as a designer, it's important to consider these technical aspects of a product and find balance between ease of use and implementation.

Listen to your users!
Having said that, designs and ideas flow very naturally by simply speaking to the users we're designing for. While participatory design is not always useful, preliminary research leading to the formation of user personas is a great tool to help put yourselves in the shoes of the user and work from there.

The Art of being Thorough
While thoroughness is greatly limited by time constraints, it should be the rule of thumb when viable. Thoroughness at one stage (eg. user research) makes the next stage much simpler (eg. ideation) and this trickles down till the end of the project. Iterative design is still necessary but thoroughness of process can greatly reduce the number of iterations needed, which is good news for our finances.
